Vegan Mofo Comfort Food: Our Old Friend, Tofu Scramble

tofu scramble

One of the first truly exciting vegan meals I had in a restaurant was in a vegetarian diner in New York City called (I think) The Veg City Diner. It was my first time in New York and one of my bandmates, who was also a vegetarian, took Lesley and I to the diner with the intent of blowing our minds. It worked. We ordered a bunch of different dishes, but one thing I definitely remember was their tofu scramble. I ordered it because the menu said it came with vegan sausages, which I'd never tried before. When the scramble came I was confused. Where were my sausages? Answer? They were IN the scramble. Cue blowing of mind.

My vegan restaurant experiences have come a long way since then (thanks in part to Ottawa's slow growth in the area of vegetarian food... hi Zen Kitchen! We're glad you're here!) but obviously that first exciting meal at the diner stayed with me because I thought of it the whole time I was making this scramble with cut up Tofurky sausages in it for breakfast the other day. It was just as good as I remembered.

Naw, I was terrible at it! :) I'm using fiction writing as my creative outlet now!

Just wanna say that I read a LOT (and I mean a LOT) of vegan food blogs, and yours is my absolute favourite. I am really enjoying mofo (as tired as you may be of blogging!). Your pictures are beautiful, and I have made a ton of your recipes.:-)

So when November is over, promise not to take too long of a break.;-)

I first had tofu scramble when a friend made it for a brunch last fall. It also blew my mind!

I imagine it would be even more mind-blowing with vegan sausage.

ps. Can you give me some recommendations for veg*n food in central Ottawa/Hull? So far I've found: Govinda's, Peace Garden, La Belle Verte, and Cafe Gaia.

Anonymous: Thank you so much! I love to hear feed back like that. I'd love to know which recipes you've tried and liked and yes, I am tired of blogging, but I will soldier on! And no plans for a break, I'll just go back to my regular blogging schedule in December.

Sarah!: Govindas is right around the corner from my house! But my husband thinks the food is bland so we never end up going there. I went there a bunch when I first lived in Ottawa, though, and had minimal funds.

Peace Garden is good, the same sect (cult?) has another one called Perfection Satisfaction Promise on Laurier. The food is good, the atmosphere is weird. There are also the pay-by-weight buffets The Green Door on Main Street and The Table in Westboro. For a ritzy meal there's Zen Kitchen or Atelier (which is not vegan, but will do a vegan menu if you ask ahead of time.)
